Welcome to the new Academy program of the New Canaan Soccer Association. I wanted to take this opportunity to review the objective of this program with you and answer a few of the questions I have received from various parents.
The main purpose of the Academy program is to provide your child an opportunity to develop his/her soccer skills in a positive environment. The Academy will directly link to the travel program through the same curriculum using the same professional coaching staff currently used by the classic travel program. Our ultimate goal is to get your child ready to compete on a travel team.
Girls Grade 3/4 Academy:
We currently have over 70 girls registered. This is a fantastic start to our program. We will assign the girls to balanced teams based on the evaluations from spring tryouts. While we would like to accommodate everyone, it will be impossible to place every girl on a team with best friends, carpools, etc. We will take into account CCD classes on Tuesday but we ask that you not make any other requests. You will be practicing on Tuesday and Thursday at either 4:15-5:45 or 5:45-7:15 based on which team you are placed. We will have a meeting the first week of school to inform you of your teams. Just like the classic travel program, we will need parents to volunteer for certain roles such as parent coach, treasurer, etc. You will be playing “in-house” which means against each other. We will do our best to create games against our neighboring towns as well. Games will be Saturday afternoons at Saxe Middle School and will be coached by your parent volunteer coach. The NOGA coach will be on hand when needed to provide extra support. You will be playing an 8 vs. 8 format.
Boys Grade 3/4 Academy:
All the other towns in the CJSA run “in-house” leagues at this level. Because we do not have enough teams to do this, we will be playing in Darien’s “in-house” league. Each week we will be playing a different Darien team. They have requested that we play each week in New Canaan, so that is convenient for us. Games will be Saturdays at 1pm at Saxe Middle School. At the end of the season Darien has invited us to participate in their “play-offs”. This will be a really fun way to end the fall soccer season. You will practice Monday 4:00-5:30 and Wednesday 5:30-7:00 at Farm Rd 1. Parents will need to organize themselves and volunteer for positions such as parent coach and treasurer. We will officially organize the first week of school at our meeting.
Grade 5/6 and Grade 7/8 Academy:
We are currently working on scheduling the games for these programs. We will be playing Darien, Wilton, Ridgefield, Weston and Danbury. Games will be Saturday afternoons and will be coached by a parent volunteer with support from your NOGA coach. The practice schedule for these teams is as follows:
Girls 5/6: Monday 5:45-7:15 and Wednesday 4:15-5:45 at Saxe field #2
Boys 5/6: Monday 4:15-5:45 and Wednesday 5:45-7:15 at Saxe field #2
Boys 7/8: Monday 5:45-7:15 and Wednesday 4:15-5:45 at Saxe field #2
We will need to organize your team and assign parent roles the first week of school. We will let you know when that meeting will be scheduled.
We will be using the same uniforms as Classic Travel. Aside from the two jerseys (one red and one white), you will need to purchase black shorts and black socks. We will be ordering all of these uniforms via an online ordering system and information will be emailed to you before the season starts. You will be notified when the jerseys are ready for pick up from the Soccer & Rugby Imports.
*Please note that registration remains open and we invite any person interested in soccer to sign up and walk on to our teams. In particular, we are looking for girls in the 7/8th grade to fill a roster. We have a handful of girls that would love to play but we do not have enough players to field a team. I know these girls would love a chance to play.
The NCSA will be hosting a Soccerfest on Saturday August 24th to kick off the season. We will have a parent meeting that will begin 15 minutes after the start of Soccerfest to answer any additional questions you might have. If you cannot attend this meeting you will be able to find all the information on the NCSA website and you can always send me an email.
I am looking forward to this second season of the Academy Program and appreciate your support.
